Linnenbauer Plaza in Herford, positioned along one of Germany’s oldest pedestrian zones, underwent a remarkable transformation, evolving from a superfluous spatial remnant into a vibrant and appealing town square catering to all generations. This substantial revitalization effort was made possible through the collaborative endeavors of local citizens, community clubs, politicians, and civic staff, highlighting the collective commitment to rejuvenating and enhancing the urban landscape for the entire community.

Starting in 2004, an intensive planning process was carried out including public participation and design workshops resulting in the 1st prize competition win.
By May 2008, the happy conclusion was the opening event of the new Linnebauer Plaza. The lost stream the “Bowerre” and a mill have historically defined the character of the square. As if in quotation, a formal water feature revives this aspect of Herford’s past in a timeless design language.
A minimalized materials and form palette inscribes the space, in contrast to the heterogeneous materials of the surroundings making it a calm counterpart to the dense urban setting.
Careful space programming includes and responds to all site users, allowing multi-generational users to coexist peacefully and be connected. Custom-made benches, a climbing wall, and a play-ship invigorate the plaza and give it its own unmistakable identity. The water features are fed with site rainwater.
